Badawi, Ghada
[MDES W1214] Intermediate Arabic I

Please keep in mind that this review is more than 5 years old.

Ghada is one of the best teachers I have had at Columbia. Her lessons are always clear and straightforward, and she always makes sure to emphasize the important points as necessary. She prepared us very well for all the quizzes/ exams, and we did a lot of great work on our writing skills. I definitely felt that everyone improved a ton over the course of the semester.

I also loved the way she would break down long reading assignments into smaller pieces for us, to make it less intimidating and more manageable when we went over them. Her teaching methods were great and very user friendly. She would also provide frequent study guides (very well organized) which were great for reviewing both recent and older material, which kept us from forgetting things we had learned previously.

Finally, Ghada is simply the sweetest person. She is incredibly patient and understanding, and really cares about the students. She also recognizes effort, and will work with the students to make sure that everyone is able to succeed. Class with her was a pleasure. Highly recommended!!

Workload:

Homework every day, as in any Arabic class, though on occasion she would cancel homework and tell us to just review the material from that day so that we could work on it some more the next day. She definitely keeps it manageable. Everything is on a check/ check plus/ check minus scale.

Department standardized quizzes and final. Comprehensize but fair.

Belhoussein, Tarik Silver_nugget
[MDES W1214] Intermediate Arabic I

Please keep in mind that this review is more than 5 years old.

I have to respectfully disagree with the previous professor. I had a different Arabic professor for first year Arabic, and found that compared to her, Tarik did not help us feel at ease in the classroom. He also is not so great at explaining grammar, which is frustrating because second year Arabic gets very technical and detail-oriented. Unlike other Arabic professors - I know of at least two others that do this - he does not pause the recording or give the class extra chances to listen to the listening portion of quizzes/exams. I know of several fellow students in my class this semester who have expressed that they are not continuing with Arabic next semester because of Tarik. Definitely try for a different professor, if you can -- compassion and clarity go a long way in learning a new language. He's a pretty nice guy, so don't be deterred from taking Arabic altogether with him, just know he is not the best that the department offers.

Workload:

Departmental 2nd year Arabic syllabus - nightly homework, 4 quizzes over the course of the semester, presentation, final exam.

El-Hage, George Silver_nugget

intimidating at first, you soon realize that prof. el-hage is simply a lebanese grandpa in disguise. he is one of the few profs i've had who genuinely tries to connect with each student (although, like a real grandfather, he'll be hard on you if he thinks you're slacking). in addition, he is always striving to make the class more challenging and relevant: on a weekly basis, he'd use the overhead to read online arabic newspapers with us. an excellent teacher and an excellent man.

Workload:

same as all the other arabic classes

Massad, Joseph
[MDES W1214] Intermediate Arabic I

Please keep in mind that this review is more than 5 years old.

Prof. Massad was arrogant and humorless. He was a bad language teacher; he put zero thought into the classes, made fun of our translations, and went straight from our (crappy) book. He might make an interesting professor for political science or something, but as a language teacher he was awful. His only qualification for teaching Arabic was that he speaks Arabic. In my opinion, he lied to us about word etymology, and if he didn't know something he it sounded like he would make it up, instead of researching the question and getting back to us. He obviously didn't care about the class. I notice that he has not taught Arabic for the past few semesters, but if he ever pops up as a teacher of Arabic, try to take someone else (like Taoufiq).

Workload:

mid-range (translations and compositions two times a week)
