Matheis, Eric
[FREN W1101] Elementary French I

I entered class on the first day not knowing any french, and i was told that the course would be a "emersion" learning experience. It was basically a class where he spoke to us as though we know french and had been speaking it our entire lives. He spoke too fast and didn't take time to stop and clarify himself. When it came to quizs, he didn't put what he said he would on the quiz and instead put everything he told us not to worry about learning. I do not recommend him as a professor unless you were placed in Elementary French and already have an extensive background in the language.

Workload:

Average hw daily about 30min and quizs weekly

Great teacher! Very chill, homework is a ton, but that is normal for all French classes. She wants you to do well, so she grades with partial credit and extra credit opportunities.

Downside: You won't learn much French, so even though you do well on everything she gives you (40% of the grade) the rest is department wide, and it will be hella impossible, so the final and especially the oral review and one of the tests in the semester where a grade downer...

Workload:

normal; very adequate and appropriately assigned!

Please keep in mind that this review is more than 5 years old.

Writing from a senior's perspective, probably one of the best professors I've had at Columbia. Alexandra is patient, kind, funny, and not too bad on the eyes either. She was fantastic at integrating the entire class into exercises with vocabulary and pronunciation, gave us the freedom to explore various linguistic and cultural differences (we once spent half a class talking about French curse words), and when we were writing all of our professor reviews we all struggled to think of anything she could improve on. Très bien!

Workload:

Average, optional workbook exercises and weekly quizzes/bi-weekly compositions. Four examens pour semestre.
