This was my favorite class of my entire college career!!! He’s such a sweetheart and honestly the best lecturer I’ve ever come across. Unlike previous semesters there’s no need to read the book at all. Just make sure you come to class, take really good notes, and an A is super manageable. I literally just went to class and took meticulous notes and ended up with an A+. His lectures are also really interesting so you won’t get bored.

Soooo interesting, taught very well, and relevant to life. He covered almost everything that was on the test in class, although he purposefully put a number of book questions on the tests (especially on the second).

It was a lot of memorization and I wouldn't say an easy A, but the material itself seemed far more straightforward than the convoluted stuff you see in many of the other Chem- and Bio-heavy classes. It definitely felt more like an intro to chem and bio through the crazy interesting lens of the brain, so to me that felt like the perfect taste of science without having to do the boring intro classes.

For a non-science major, this was challenging but by no means impossible :)

Probably one of the easiest classes I have ever taken. I did minimal studying and I got only 2 questions maximum wrong on one test... The others I only got 1 question wrong. He presents his slides very clearly, so it is easy to understand what he is talking about. He is also very open to people asking questions during lecture. Honestly though, I think that this course does not really go that deep into the science. That made it really easy to learn. For example, I was taking Hormones and Behavior with Kara Pham at the same time, and we had to know SOO many more details.

The lab for this class is harder, but it's not bad either. Overall very easy to do well in this class.

Workload:

Multiple choice question tests that were incredibly so much easier than anything I encountered in high school. . . I thought AP exams were supposed to prepare you for college, not make you bored at college?

while i didn't enjoy this class (not a psych major; took it for the requirement), it was more or less painless. romeo is incredibly organized and straightforward. the lectures are basically verbatim from the textbook, but that isn't to say that lectures aren't worth going to. he's good at explaining things, which was helpful for me because i considered this class way out of my comfort zone. all in all, i wouldn't recommend this for someone taking it for the requirement, because it's more neuroscience than psych. also, the lab part was way more science than i ever imagined, and i struggled a bit, although she's an easier grader than she appears.

Workload:

standard 3 multiple choice exams. readings from the text. if you take the lab part too though, a little more work, and especially difficult if you're not science oriented. i stressed about the reports, but it turned out fine in the end.

Romeo is a totally nice man who tries hard but falls short of being a good professor. I really liked him at the beginning of the semester because he made jokes and seemed very casual. However, the first two exams were obscenely difficult and required hours and hours of studying minute details. The last exam was substantially easier, I assume because so many people complained that he finally gave in and gave a fair test. He's very easy to approach after class or in office hours and generally seems to enjoy getting to know students. However, lectures were straight from the text book and the powerpoint slides were boring. He could have added some interactive component to this lecture class to make it more exciting, but instead I found myself browsing the internet for an hour like everyone else around me.

Workload:

Two midterms and a final. The midterms were extremely difficult, the final not so much. Reading and memorizing hundreds of terms for the tests, but no work other than this.

Though Professor Romeo covers a broad range of topics, the class is really interesting. Romeo was very good at explaining the material which wasn't difficult for Neuro majors (I'm in this group) and not too terrible for psych/non-majors. You'll do fine on the exams if you just study the notes. They have a lot of information, but it's really just a matter of memorization - not a lot of conceptual stuff. If you have any problems with it, you can always talk to him - he's incredibly smart and very approachable.

Workload:

Two exams (50 q's) and a final (non-cumulative, 65 q's). All multiple choice. The class had a pretty high average (B--> B+) so he didn't curve.

Prof. Canbeyli is very prepared for the material that he is covering. I can't get over the fact that he can handle 3 hours of lecture without looking at his notes even once. He knows everything thoroughly, which makes this class highly recomendable. He is willing to explain into length everything that students don't understand. I regret the fact that he teaches only during the summer.

Workload:

The material requires serious consideration and if you are not familiar with it previously, it might be difficult. The exams usually are short essays based on comparison. He loves dates memorization.

Professor Currie was a laid-back teacher who taught the material well and let us out early almost every class. My only problem with this class was that it was at 6:10 at night. If you study the slides you will do just fine on the tests- most of the questions from the test were straight from the slides- book is not so imporant. You can study the night before and still get an A on the test- and he curves if necessary- one test he added 7 points to everyone's tests. If you study youll get an A.

Workload:

Not bad- read the slides and the few chapters he emphasizes its an easy A. 2 tests, and a basically non-cumulative final besides for reviewing the neuron

Previous reviews have been way too harsh. You tottaly do not have to go to class ever considering that the lecture material is all posted on courseworks. As long as you memorize every word of those slides, you will do fine on the test. Don't even bother with the textbook ( a huge relief considering the millions of extra details that could be covered if the textbook material was on the exams). Getting an A in this class is not nearly as hard as some make it out to be-just know the slides and you will definately do fine.

Workload:

3 exams. Final is not cumulative except for 2 topics covered in the beginning of the semester.

this class is hard. prof currie really can be entertaining when he wants to be and the stuff you learn is really interesting. really really interesting. you may go home and be all about "wanna know something cool i learned today??" with your friends. you may study your ass off and do really well on your first exam. you may also continue to study your ass off and get a C+ in the class. just be warned.

Workload:

the workload isnt really heavy. but if youre a psych major and need this or perception and feel this is the lesser of two evils.. im sorry my dear, you might get your first C+ of your college career.

Professor McCaskill is a gem of a teacher. She is by far one of the top three teachers I have had in three and half years of college. She actually knows the material she is teaching and can therefore answer your questions...and when she is stumped she doesnt make something up but actually looks up the answer and gets back to you. Very rare for a Columbia Prof. She is more than willing to stay VERY late in order to meet with you and help you out. She hold amazing review sessions for BN. Very worth going to because if you do go she knows youre devoted and will give you hints as to what is on the test and what is not. She is the type of Professor who will sit with you for hours to help you with anything, whether it be school work or grad schools apps. She is even willing to help you out with work from other classes. She is just a great teacher...though much better in small setting classes. I highly recommend taking her for a seminar rather than a lecture becuase the lecture could get a little tedious. But in a small group setting she is amazing.

Workload:

Not bad. Drug Use and Abuse- midterm (both are difficult if you dont study) final, paper (REALLY easy). BN- two midterms and a final. You MUST study for these...its a lot of memorization.

Professor McCaskill is very nice, and it's clear she cares about her students. I've also heard she holds great review sessions and explains things well in lab. However, her class was one of the most frustrating experiences I've had in college so far. In lecture, she would read straight from Powerpoint slides which were so poorly organized and incoherently written it often seemed she had not taken enough time to prepare. She did not explain the often difficult terms and concepts on the slides-- she just read them, leaving us to try to decipher them later. Reading the book was helpful sometimes, but she often contradicted what it said. So studying for tests meant trying to make sense of her slides, memorizing lots of material I didn't fully understand, and trying to decide whether to follow the book or her. Basically, this class took really interesting material and made it painful. I got the impression that she didn't care if we understood anything-- she just wanted us to memorize it. If you're really interested in knowing and understanding this stuff, don't take this class-- it might turn you off from neuroscience.

Workload:

A pretty substantial amount of reading the textbook, two midterms, and a final. The tests are nitpicky, so memorize, memorize, memorize! Also, leave yourself plenty of time to decipher the slides.

Emmet is a really nice lady who makes herself available to students. The material of the course ranges from rogue memorization of locations and functions of different parts of the brain (boring) to interesting case studies. Her exams are very tricky. She expects you to know every little detail of each topic, so that she'll ask you a very basic question on one topic that you know in-depth, and a nitpicky question on a topic that you didn't even bother studying, or that you have no recollection of even learning. I probably would not take this class again if I had the choice.

2 mid-terms, 1 final (a bitch).

I loved this course. If you keep up with the material it's challenging but EXTREMELY interesting. Professor Currie is very fair and makes the material understandable. This course is definitely not an easy A. but if you get an A you know you deserved it.

heavy, good text and great videos!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was scared to death reading those other reviews since I had to take this class with the lab. I've got to tell you, I don't know what drugs these people were on! She is awsome, spends as much time as you need outside of class, is totally organized, and will really go out of the way to help. I asked some of the poeple who had her for other labs, and they said she was great. Must be the "I want an A with no effort" students who hated her - you work your butt off, but learn tons.

Workload:

Intense labs, big write-ups (exam and 3 papers) but you learn from it.

This is a very difficult class if you have never taken Biology or a lot of other psych courses. It is a lot of memorization of specific details, and he assumes you have a large background in bio, especially for the first exam. The exams are all T/F, mult choice, and fill in the blanks, with maybe a diagram if you are lucky. If you are good at these types of tests, go for it, but if you are looking for a chance to show him how much you know, its not gonna happen. All the exam material comes from the lectures, which are all power point. Don't bother with the book, don't even buy it, the only time he ever mentions it is to tell us when it is wrong. All in all, if you are willing to put in the time to memorize his lectures, the tests aren't that difficult, but are tricky, so watch out. He is a cool guy but can be kinda mean sometimes, so watch out. People tend to come out of it with A's and B's. Don't take it unless you are a psych, neuro, or bio major, because it isn't the most enjoyable class to go to.
*Those who took this class with lab did much better in the class and seemed to enjoy it more, because they complement each other well. If you want to take the class, wait until you can get into the lab too!

2 Midterms, Cumulative final. No reading needed.

In contrast to previous reviews, I found the class to to be incredibly dense and hard. There is a -lot- of material. For a non-neuroscience major, there are sure many other courses that have lighter workloads. The exams are detailed (or as some would say, tricky). Regardless of what anyone says, asking about a specific drug and its specific recepter when you need to memorize about ten other drugs all of different combinations is difficult, especially if you are taking other priority courses. Prof Currie can sometimes be a jerk, but for the most part seems approachable. Prof Taylor may seem intimidating at first for lab, but she is very patient, and you'll find yourself grateful for your lab grade as it'll often boost your lecture grade (that is, if you spent any time listening to her directions on how to write the labs).

Workload:

Three exams, one a cumulative final with new material (he says previous chapters account for 20% of the final, but it's actually much less). Must actually listen at lectures -and- read the textbook if you want to get an A. I would not call this class easy at all. But if you're a bio major, then this should be cakewalk for you.

The best teacher I have ever had....not only do you stay awake during lectures, you WANT to GO to lectures. He is brilliant, and makes all of the material he covers interesting. HOWEVER--i underestimated the enjoyment for easiness...do study and go to lecture....he is a lot more detail oriented than you think. If you are thinking about taking a psych class THIS CLASS IS THE ONE YOU SHOULD TAKE!!!

Prof Horvitz is great lecturer. He always comes well prepared with clear slide show demonstrations. He really knows his stuff and is passionate about teaching. Additionally, he has a very good sense of humor, which is compunded by the fact that he often laughs at his own jokes. Overall, a great class to take even if u despise science.

Yes, he's generally entertaining and enthusiastic. But a word of caution: Never approach him to dispute your test results at the end of office hours--by then he's in a bitchy mood and will bite your head off.
