Based on Professor Como's performance in Colloquium on Major Texts, I am confused by his silver nugget. While Colloquium on Major Texts is largely a student-led discussion class, Professor Como did only a sub-par job framing the issues found in the texts and guiding the students who ultimately led the discussion.

Each week, Professor Gamalinda assigns a 1-2 hour film to watch before the class' weekly 1 hour and 50-minute meeting. Either Professor Gamalinda or a group presents on the assigned movie for 30 minutes and the remainder of the class is allocated to discussion. After class is over, Professor Gamalinda assigns a 300-word response due by end of the weekend. He is so kind that he consistently ends class 20 minutes early to allow students to get a head start and even finish their response paper before class is over. This class is truly a hidden gem. It is a 4-credit global core that meets for 90 minutes once per week. There is no easier class to fulfill the global core requirement and if you have the option to take this class, sign up immediately, you will not regret it.

One of the best professors I've had at Columbia. Extremely passionate about the subject and his lectures are so entertaining to listen to. He is highly knowledgeable about what he is teaching and makes sure his knowledge gets through to us in a practical way. He definitely has taken a decent amount of time from class to talk about food in the time periods he is teaching, so you know he's a 10/10 guy. There is a decent amount of reading, but it is definitely doable and worth it. My perspective of ancient civilizations has changed because of his teachings. Would highly recommend taking any of his classes. Also s/o to one of his TA's Dan Nguyen, another great guy, and a kind grader.

An excellent course with an excellent professor. I was looking for a good and easy global core, and this certainly fit the bill. Prof. Phan is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about Vietnamese history, and he teaches the course in such a way that his passion shines through and enhances the lectures. I had no previous interest in Vietnamese history, but Prof. Phan's lectures kept me engaged and interested. You end up learning a great deal about major religions in East Asia, varying conceptions of power, and relations between Vietnam and its neighbors through the French colonial world. A little time is spent beyond this, but not much; he said there is a followup class in the Spring that better addresses the modern period. I loved this class, and would recommend it to anyone, SEAS, CC, or GS! Prof. Phan is amazing and I hope I get to take another class with him!
